This ‘Good Omens’ Season 2 Character Deserves More Attention

The second season of Good Omens received a mixed response due to its focus on Aziraphale and Crowley, leaving smaller characters sidelined. While the twist of Beelzebub and Gabriel’s secret romance was delightful, it was too short-lived, and audiences wanted more exploration of their relationship. The show missed an opportunity to spend more time in Hell, which offers rich storytelling opportunities and showcases impressive production design in contrast to Heaven’s empty white-walled setting.

When Good Omens Season 2 premiered on Prime Video in late July, it garnered a mixed response. Critics and viewers alike had complaints about the disjointed plot that prioritized Aziraphale and Crowley, played by Michael Sheen and David Tennant respectively, engaging in their usual antics reminiscent of SNL skits. Although these escapades were enjoyable, they left audiences wanting more development for the show’s smaller characters. Season 2 reduced the cast list from the first season and many of the featured characters could have benefited from more screen time.

One such character with untapped potential is Beelzebub, portrayed by Shelley Conn. As the leader of the forces of hell, Beelzebub is the devilish counterpart to Gabriel, played by Jon Hamm. The character was originally portrayed by Anna Maxwell Martin in Season 1 but Conn took over in Season 2 due to Martin’s filming commitments. Beelzebub’s storyline ties into the theme of love in Good Omens Season 2, as she forms a relationship with Gabriel while working together to prevent another war between Heaven and Hell. This twist adds a romantic element to the show’s overall rom-com storyline.

In a series filled with various romantic subplots, the relationship between Beelzebub and Gabriel stands out as a better love story than that of Nina and Maggie, portrayed by Nina Sosanya and Maggie Service. While Aziraphale and Crowley play matchmakers for the shopkeepers, Nina and Maggie, their storyline takes up a significant amount of screentime that could have been used elsewhere. In contrast, Beelzebub and Gabriel’s love story feels more connected to the show’s main plot of the battles between Heaven and Hell.

Good Omens’ impressive production design has been a standout feature throughout both seasons. Season 2 provides a closer look at Hell, with its dimly lit, office-like setting creating an entertaining atmosphere. This location offers potential for future series or even a spin-off due to its rich possibilities. Despite glimpses of Gabriel’s heavenly antics, viewers get limited exposure to Beelzebub and her place in the underworld. A deeper exploration of this demonic location and Beelzebub’s role would enhance her relationship with Gabriel and add stakes to their forbidden love.

Overall, Good Omens Season 2 had surprising romantic elements. While the show struggled to balance the fantasy conflict and rom-com comedy, it neglected some of its more intriguing characters. Beelzebub, in particular, has potential for storytelling, especially when considering her secret romance with Gabriel. Shelley Conn’s performance hints at the depth she could bring to the character. Hopefully, showrunner Neil Gaiman will delve deeper into Beelzebub and Gabriel’s forbidden love in future seasons.
