Things are about to get more mature in Meta’s Horizon Worlds VR experience

TL;DR

  • Horizon Worlds, the free VR world run by Facebook’s parent company Meta,  will now allow more mature content.
  • Content creators can now have an 18+ rating to alert users of mature content in their worlds.
  • However, certain content will still be banned from Horizon Worlds.

Meta is making some changes to Horizon Worlds, the free-to-play VR experience that supports virtual reality devices like the Meta Quest 2. UploadVR reports that an email sent to Horizon Worlds content creators stated that user-created worlds will now be rated either for everyone or for people 18 years old or older. Content creators will have 30 days to change their rating, or their worlds will be rated 18+ as a default, no matter what kind of content they have.

So what will be allowed under the new mature rating in Horizon Worlds? According to Meta’s support pages, the 18+ worlds can have “sexually suggestive” content, including near nudity. Those worlds can also have fictional violence, and depictions of certain drugs, including “marijuana, alcohol, tobacco” and even gambling.

It’s not the Wild West, however. Horizon Worlds will still ban the depiction of “sexually explicit or provocative” content, no matter what the world is rated. That’s also true for showing real life intense violence, the use of illegal drugs, and things that depict “criminal or dangerous activity”. These changes come as Meta is about to ditch the requirement to use Facebook accounts for the Meta Quest VR headsets, The headsets will now require a Meta account, which means you must use your real name to access the headset.
