‘The Witcher’ Season 3 Part 2 Ending Explained: Who Survives the War?

Netflix’s decision to split Season 3 of “The Witcher” has allowed fans to fully digest the intricate plot developments in the Continent. Part 1 revealed the identity of the rogue mage who sought to acquire Ciri, while Part 2 explores the consequences of Vilgefortz’s war on the Continent, forcing all characters to pick sides. Geralt of Rivia, unable to stand by as his family is put in danger, joins the conflict. Season 3, Part 2 not only delves into the complex politics of the show but also sets the stage for Season 4 by establishing the goals of each character moving forward.

In this installment, Vilgefortz leads Nilfgaardian troops to Aretuza, resulting in heavy casualties and the near destruction of the mage community. Aretuza loses many mages, including powerful wielders such as Artorius and Stregobor. Tissaia, devastated by Vilgefortz’s betrayal, takes her own life after the battle. However, Yennefer takes charge of the surviving mages and vows to hunt down Vilgefortz to ensure the safety of the Continent and rebuild the Brotherhood of Sorcerers.

Meanwhile, Dijkstra and Philippa attempt a coup in Aretuza to expose Vilgefortz’s crimes and unite the Brotherhood against Nilfgaard. Their plans are thwarted by Vilgefortz, and King Vizimir orders Dijkstra to kill Philippa. However, Dijkstra sacrifices himself for her, strengthening their bond. Phillipa takes matters into her own hands by assassinating Vizimir and crowning Radovid as the new king, causing turmoil within Redania.

Despite seemingly gaining an advantage over the North, Nilfgaard faces internal turmoil. Fringilla plans to betray the Emperor in exchange for freedom from the Continent, while Francesca seeks revenge for the murder of her child. These tensions could lead to an Elven uprising. Additionally, Vilgefortz brings Ciri to Nilfgaard, but it is revealed that the presented Ciri is actually a fake, leading to potential weakening of Nilfgaard’s position.

Geralt, after recovering from his injuries, sets off on a journey with Jaskier and Milva to find Ciri, abandoning his neutrality and vowing revenge against Nilfgaard and Vilgefortz. Ciri, mistakenly teleported to the Korath desert, navigates the harsh environment and faces her own internal battles. She eventually relinquishes her powers and joins a group of bounty hunters called The Rats, embracing her destructive desires.

As the season comes to a close, the devastating attack on Aretuza and the destruction of the mage community leave a profound impact. Yennefer emerges as a leader, while Dijkstra and Philippa’s plans are thwarted. Radovid’s relationship with Jaskier is disrupted as he takes the throne. Nilfgaard faces internal conflicts, and an Elven uprising looms. Geralt seeks revenge, and Ciri finds a new group to travel with. The stage is set for future episodes of “The Witcher.”
