The Significance of Representation, Upcoming Games, and Canadian Indies: Insights from Sarah Bond of Xbox.

Xbox recently held its annual summer Games Showcase on June 11th, unveiling dozens of upcoming titles including a 40-minute deep dive into Bethesda’s highly anticipated Starfield. The showcase was particularly significant for Xbox, as it provided fans with a substantial preview of the exclusive portfolio that the company has been building up over the past several years through acquisitions. From long-awaited updates on titles like Playground’s Fable and Ninja Theory’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II to new IPs from studios such as Montreal’s Compulsion Games and inXile, Xbox addressed the oft-asked question of “where are the games?”

After the event, MobileSyrup had the opportunity to interview Xbox’s Sarah Bond, the corporate vice president for game creator experience and ecosystem. Bond talked about Starfield, other first-party titles, representation in the industry, and the pending Activision Blizzard acquisition, amongst other things.

When asked about Starfield and the support Xbox has provided to Bethesda, Sarah Bond explained that they have been working closely together over the past 18 months. The Xbox team has been focused on ensuring that Bethesda has everything they need to take advantage of all the available technology and expertise across Xbox, including her team, to release the best possible game.

One of the things that sets Xbox apart from their competitors is the visible and transparent presence of their executives, such as Sarah Bond, Phil Spencer, and Aaron Greenberg. During the interview, Bond discussed why being transparent with fans is so important and how it has helped her understand their reactions, needs, and concerns, making her better at her job.

Bond also touched on the importance of representation in the industry, explaining that it is impossible to create authentic and innovative experiences for everyone if the team only represents a narrow demographic. Xbox’s goal is to create a team that represents the broadest swath of people possible, and they have made a lot of progress over the years in this regard.

During the interview, Bond also spoke about her support for smaller, independent developers, such as Cococucumber and Thunder Lotus, discussing the incremental good that social media presence can bring to these developers. She noted that Xbox works on long arcs on partnerships, building trust and understanding over time to support their partners in launching, marketing, and continuing to realize success.

Overall, the interview provided insight into the inner workings of Xbox and their commitment to supporting their partners while creating games and experiences that represent a diverse range of perspectives.
