The Reasons Behind Sam Lake’s Happiness: Alan Wake 2’s 10-Year Journey and Overcoming “Four Failed Attempts”

Alan Wake 2 is an impressive game that rivals the esteemed Resident Evil remake series in terms of survival horror excellence. Since its release 13 years ago, the original Alan Wake has captivated horror fans and narrative game enthusiasts, earning recognition as one of the best Xbox 360 games by both consumers and critics. However, the wait for a proper sequel has been lengthy.

According to Remedy Entertainment’s creative director and lead writer, Sam Lake, Alan Wake has always been a special project with plans for more iterations. After the first game, they had a concept for a sequel, but the timing wasn’t right. Some of those ideas were incorporated into the smaller spin-off, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare.

However, fans have longed for a full-fledged sequel, and their wishes were granted at the 2021 Game Awards. But before this, Sam Lake made three attempts to kickstart Alan Wake 2. One of the ideas involved using live-action episodes to tell the story, which impressed Microsoft but ultimately morphed into the creation of Quantum Break instead.

Interestingly, there is a connection between Quantum Break and Alan Wake 2 through Kyle Rowley, the game director on Remedy’s latest project. Rowley previously served as the lead designer on Quantum Break, which featured experimental live-action interludes. Despite developing this new IP and meeting Microsoft’s desire for multi-format media, Lake remained eager to develop Alan Wake 2.

After Quantum Break, Remedy took a different route with a more action-focused and open-ended project. This led to the creation of Control, a critically acclaimed game that exists in the same universe as Alan Wake. Control laid the foundation for something big and strange, with subtle references to Alan Wake hidden within its environments.

With Control’s success, Remedy had the pieces in place to make Alan Wake 2. After acquiring the publishing rights to the original game and creating a remaster for a wider audience, they knew a sequel was on the horizon. This is why the second DLC for Control served as a crossover, setting up the events of Alan Wake 2.

Over the past 13 years, Remedy has learned valuable lessons in terms of production costs and development timelines. They have refined their processes, resulting in shorter development times for each subsequent game. Sam Lake has had ample time to reflect on his vision for Alan Wake 2.

Despite going through multiple concept stages, Lake expresses relief that none of the previous ideas became a full game. He believes they have discovered exciting new ways to tell the story and create an exceptional gaming experience in Alan Wake 2.

From what has been revealed so far, Alan Wake 2 promises to deliver everything fans have been waiting for in the series. Combining elements of Scandi crime thrillers, mind-bending narratives like Midsommar, and Remedy’s unique “New Weird” style, it’s a culmination of 13 years of anticipation.


Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 17 as a digital-only game available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
