The Producer of Christian Dior Series Describes it as “Something More Than a Mere Fashion Show”

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the renowned producer of box office hits such as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and the soon-to-be-released The Meg 2: The Trench and Madame Web, is now setting his sights on a more artistic project. The New Look, a Christian Dior series ordered by Apple TV+ last year and starring Ben Mendelsohn as the fashion icon, is one of his upcoming releases. Set in Paris during WWII, the show will highlight the stories of Dior and fellow designer Coco Chanel, portrayed by Juliette Binoche, and their complicated relationships with the Nazi occupation. Collider’s Steve Weintraub recently sat down with Bonaventura to discuss the show’s development and its focus on more than just fashion.

Despite the backdrop of wartime Paris and exploring the lives of historical figures Dior and Chanel, The New Look will showcase the entire cast of major designers from that era, including Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Givenchy. The series aims to provide a nuanced portrayal of Dior’s creative process and the challenges he faced in an era of Nazi domination. His sister, played by Maisie Williams, will also feature prominently, adding a resistance fighter perspective to the storyline. Bonaventura aims to portray the human story behind the fashion world of that time, including the conflicts between civilian and artistic interests.

The ten-episode series, which has already wrapped filming and is now in post-production, will provide an authentic representation of Dior’s work through close collaboration with the fashion house. The show’s crew used Dior patterns and seamstresses to recreate the designer’s unique aesthetic, but they also added a modern touch to some of the pieces to make them more practical for filming. Bonaventura is proud of his partnership with the fashion house and their shared commitment to honoring Dior’s legacy.

While it is unclear how audiences will respond to The New Look, test audiences have already demonstrated a strong reaction to the series, including men who are also enjoying the show’s compelling characters and nuanced portrayal of WWII-era Paris. The show is slated to debut in the first quarter of 2024, and it is sure to provide an insightful and moving portrayal of one of the fashion world’s most eminent figures. Stay tuned for more updates and news on The New Look and other exciting projects from Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
