The Pixel 7a potentially incorporates a marginally lower-performing Tensor G2 processor

Renowned leaker discovers unique packaging for the Pixel 7a’s Tensor G2 chip, potentially resulting in improved performance and higher temperatures. Our benchmark testing revealed that the Pixel 7a is comparable to the flagship Pixel 7. Despite being a mid-range device, the Google Pixel 7a shares the same Tensor G2 processor as its high-end counterpart. However, a trusted leaker, Kamila Wojciechowska, suggests that the Pixel 7a chip may differ from the standard Tensor G2 chip in terms of packaging.

According to Wojciechowska, the Pixel 7a’s Tensor G2 chip utilizes IPOP packaging, which is said to be thicker, larger, and hotter than the FOPLP-PoP packaging used in the standard Tensor G2 chip. While it remains uncertain whether this difference in packaging has real-world implications for the Pixel 7a, it is worth noting that our own testing indicated that the mid-range Pixel performs similarly to the Pixel 7 series in most aspects. However, the Pixel 7a falls behind the standard model in sustained graphical performance. This divergence could be attributed to the packaging, but it is also possible that it is influenced by the phone’s cooling mechanisms and overall design.

Are consumers concerned about the Pixel 7a’s use of cheaper packaging for its chip?

– 24% of respondents answered that they are definitely concerned.
– 32% expressed that they might be concerned if there is a noticeable performance gap.
– 44% claimed that they do not care.

Nevertheless, the Pixel 7a remains a powerful mid-range smartphone choice. However, recent testing conducted by Android Authority revealed that it may not be the top choice for budget-conscious gamers.

We have reached out to Google representatives for clarification on this apparent discrepancy and will update the article accordingly. Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.
