The highly anticipated sequel to the 2000 film “Chicken Run” is finally set to be released, as the film’s release date has been confirmed. After a long wait of over twenty-three years, fans will be able to return to the farm when “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” arrives on Netflix on December 15, 2023.
The new film continues the story of a group of chickens and other farm animals who escape from the villainous Mrs. Tweedy and her plan to turn them into pies. Settling into a peaceful life, Ginger and Rocky have a child named Molly. However, their tranquility is disrupted as they are once again called upon to save their kind from the clutches of humans.
When “Chicken Run” was released in 2000, it was a critical and commercial success, with a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a box office gross of over $220 million. It became the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time. So why did it take so long for a sequel to materialize? One possible reason is the partnership between Ardman Animations, DreamWorks Animation, and Pathé, which ended in 2006. This may have caused some financial setbacks due to the difference in the size of the production companies. However, a sequel was eventually announced in 2018, with pre-production starting in October 2019.
The returning team behind the first film, including writers Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, as well as executive producers Peter Lord and David Sproxton, have worked on “Dawn of the Nugget”. Cast members Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks, and Lynn Ferguson will reprise their roles, but Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson will not be returning. Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton will voice the roles of Rocky and Ginger instead. Other cast changes include Romesh Ranganathan voicing Nick and Daniel Mays replacing Phil Daniels as Fetcher. The late Benjamin Whitrow’s role of Fowler will be voiced by David Bradley. The film is directed by Sam Fell and produced by Paul Kewley.
