The Intriguing Connection Between ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Little House on the Prairie’

Long before Yellowstone captured the hearts of audiences nationwide, there was another highly popular series that held the Western/rural drama title. Little House on the Prairie, while not your conventional Western, had a similar appeal to rural audiences, albeit with a focus on “family values” rather than the political drama depicted in Yellowstone. Little House was actually based on a series of novels written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, which contributed to its enduring popularity. But where do these two shows intersect?

The third season of Yellowstone brought several changes to the series, including the introduction of a new character named Teeter, portrayed by Jen Landon. Initially appearing in the episode “Freight Trains and Monsters,” Teeter quickly became a recurring character and was later promoted to a series regular. Known for her Texan accent and tough attitude, Teeter has evolved beyond a Southern stereotype and has grown on audiences throughout her time on the show.

If the surname “Landon” sounds familiar, it’s because Jen Landon is actually the daughter of Michael Landon, who starred in and executive produced Little House on the Prairie. Michael Landon had an extensive presence in the Western genre even before Little House, playing Little Joe Cartwright on the iconic series Bonanza for over a decade. Following Bonanza, he went on to create and star in Little House, solidifying his status as a household name. The series resonated with viewers due to its focus on family values and simple living, resulting in its continued popularity through reruns today.

After Little House, Michael Landon shifted gears and created a new series called Highway to Heaven, featuring himself and Victor French, his co-star from Little House. This show, centered around spirituality and modern-day miracles, differed greatly from his Western roots but still captivated audiences. Unfortunately, Highway to Heaven was canceled after five years, serving as Landon and French’s final series together.

Despite not appearing on Little House, Jen Landon has pursued her own acting career in the 21st century. She made her debut in the industry with a role in her father’s series Highway to Heaven, playing a young girl in one of the episodes. Although Michael Landon passed away in 1991, his legacy in the film industry has influenced his children, with Leslie Landon, Christopher Landon, and Michael Landon Jr. all pursuing careers in entertainment.

Jen Landon has found success beyond Yellowstone, securing recurring roles in shows like Banshee, FBI: Most Wanted, and Animal Kingdom, as well as appearing in daytime soaps. While she follows in her father’s footsteps in the Western genre, Jen Landon has carved her own unique path. Her talent and dedication are sure to make Michael Landon proud.

While Yellowstone and Little House on the Prairie are distinct in their own right, both shows have garnered significant popularity for their Western-themed storytelling. The success of Yellowstone and its specific brand of Western drama is something worth celebrating and may inspire the creation of more captivating content in the future. Who knows, perhaps Jen Landon will lead the charge in a potential reboot of Little House on the Prairie. It’s a dream worth entertaining.
