The Director of ‘The Marvels’ Enjoyed “Greater Creative Independence” within the MCU Compared to ‘Candyman’

[Editor’s note: This interview was recorded prior to the SAG strike.]

Teyonah Parris is not ready to reveal whether her appearance in The Marvels will secure her a position among Earth’s mightiest heroes, but she is willing to discuss one of the most exceptional filmmakers—Nia DaCosta. In a recent interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, Parris and John Boyega conversed about Netflix’s They Cloned Tyrone. Nemiroff took the opportunity to ask some Marvel-related questions, specifically about Parris’ experience working with the esteemed director of Candyman.

Towards the end of the interview, Nemiroff asked about Parris’ collaboration with DaCosta once again, as they previously worked together on the 2021 sequel to the 1992 slasher film directed by Bernard Rose. According to Parris, audiences can expect something extraordinary from DaCosta’s latest feature, as The Marvels has a larger budget and a broader universe to work within. Parris also mentioned that working in a sci-fi world afforded them more creative freedom compared to the horror genre. Parris expressed her admiration for DaCosta’s ability to bring her imaginative ideas to life in this new world they were creating. The film also stars Brie Larson and Iman Vellani.

While Nemiroff didn’t inquire about the extent of Parris’ character, Monica Rambeau, in future Marvel projects beyond The Marvels, her co-star Boyega couldn’t help but probe for more details. Boyega playfully suggested that Parris might appear in The Kang Dynasty among the Avengers. The conversation ended with a playful exchange where Parris was humorously deemed an Avenger.
