The Demo for Lies of P Triumphantly Relieves the Itch for Bloodborne

From Software’s Bloodborne has kept me captivated for almost a decade now, and I have been eagerly anticipating news of a sequel. While there have been many games that attempt to capture the “Soulsborne” atmosphere, few manage to encompass the entire package. However, after experiencing the Lies of P demo for a few hours, I have finally found a game to scratch that itch.

Although Pinocchio as the protagonist was not my first choice, it is evident that developer NeoWiz has not taken inspiration from Disney’s animated version. Krat, the city where the game is set, is filled with puppet servants, police dogs, and more. However, something has caused these puppets to become deranged, and they now roam the city, hunting down its former residents and turning it into a nightmare.

Krat bears a striking resemblance to Bloodborne’s Yharnam and Bioshock’s Rapture- both once prosperous utopias now fallen into ruin and gore. The immersive atmosphere is incredibly impressive, with bodies strewn about the streets, and a mysterious plague infecting the populace. The city’s alleys, courtyards, and interiors are meticulously rendered, with the Hotel Krat serving as a base of sorts for players to return to and level up.

Lies of P functions as a well-crafted action-RPG that seems to encapsulate From Software’s greatest mechanics. The prosthetic arm and weapons are reminiscent of Sekiro, while the weapon arts are similar to Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring. The game’s combat style is fast-paced, akin to Bloodborne’s, but players will need to master the strategic art of parrying to succeed. They can gain back lost health by attacking, and upgrade their character by swapping out the prosthetic arm and combining the ends of one weapon with the handle of another. These elements all come together to create uniquely challenging gameplay.

The two main bosses in the demo were tough and satisfying to overcome. Their attacks required pattern recognition and skill, and their fights felt weighty and impactful. Lies of P handles weapon degradation by having weapons degrade faster than usual and allowing players to restore them by turning their left arm into a whetstone, making them vulnerable in the process. Furthermore, the ominous notification that my “strings were tightening” when I lied made me question the effect of my actions on the story.

Without a doubt, Lies of P’s immersive atmosphere, fast-paced combat, and unique mechanics have captured my attention. This game has the potential to recapture the magic and terror of Bloodborne while delivering a fresh and unique experience.
