Netflix is betting big on the future of The Witcher franchise despite the exit of lead star Henry Cavill. The streamer has put significant resources into building giant sets for Season 3, including impressive locations such as Aretuza and a massive village on the backlot. Collider was given an exclusive tour of the set whilst Season 3 was still in production and uncovered the secrets of the Continent.
The backlot village set for Season 3 of The Witcher is built to scale and features multiple store buildings and crowded streets. Rather than representing a particular place, the set can be used to shoot vastly different scenes by repositioning cameras and adding green sheets. This approach gives the crew flexibility while still favoring real structures over CGI environments.
According to supervising art director Stuart Kearns, building the backlot set was not an easy task. After conceptualization, it took 300 workers five months to build the giant location. Additionally, Aretuza has now become one unified space for Season 3, equipped to sustain the weight of the cast, crew, and heavy equipment, allowing for dynamic scenes through multiple stores. The set’s producer, Steve Gaub, called the giant set an engineering feat and teased the destruction of Aretuza in Season 3.
Season 3 of The Witcher is split into two parts, with Volume 1 debuting on Netflix on June 29. Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia starting in Season 4. Stay tuned for more exclusive insights from Collider’s set visit.
