Stoic Studio, the award-winning makers of the Banner Saga franchise, have just announced their latest creation at the Summer Game Fest Xbox Showcase. The upcoming game, called Towerborne, is an exciting action-RPG brawler that appears to be quite different from their previous works.
Towerborne is set in a unique fantasy world where humanity is forced to seek refuge in The Belfry, a massive tower that overlooks a land overrun by monsters and other strange creatures. The gameplay features classic co-op brawling, strategy, and RPG elements, all wrapped up in a family-friendly experience. In a recent blog post, Principal Game Designer Alex Thomas said that they wanted to create a game that is enjoyable to play with family and friends and even at conventions.
The studio was inspired by classic beat ’em up games and wanted to incorporate those elements into Towerborne, creating a game that continuously expands upon its features and gameplay modes for as long as possible. Additionally, Towerborne will have a unique approach to a typical RPG mechanic. In Towerborne, death is a key element for the game’s heroes known as Aces. Instead of dying and respawning, your hero’s death plays into the storyline. Thomas said that “you’re not just doing it because you’re some kind of superhero, you’re doing it because you’re supporting this whole civilization during something of a cataclysm.”
Towerborne is a seasonal game, and the developers plan to add new content over time while continuing to unfold the overarching narrative. Thomas explained that the premise was to create a story where the content updates and changes in gameplay feel intertwined with the world, rather than artificial.
Towerborne is an Xbox-published title that will be released on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Game Pass, and PC via Steam in 2024. So gear up for an action-packed adventure through the land of monsters and mysteries with Towerborne.
