The Callisto Protocol studio Striking Distance confirms layoffs

Striking Distance Studios, the renowned developer behind the highly anticipated game The Callisto Protocol set to be released in 2022, has recently undergone a restructuring process which has resulted in the unfortunate layoff of 32 employees. This strategic decision aims to realign the studio’s priorities and ensure the success of both current and future projects.

The news of these layoffs was initially brought to attention by a Twitter user named @bogorad222 who spotted LinkedIn messages discussing the layoffs. This information was later confirmed by Striking Distance Studios in a statement provided to IGN. The studio expressed that 32 employees have been affected by these changes, emphasizing that their departure will be supported with outplacement services and significant severance packages.

“Striking Distance Studios and KRAFTON have implemented strategic changes that realign the studio’s priorities to better position its current and future projects for success. Unfortunately, these changes have impacted 32 employees. Honoring the invaluable contributions of each departing team member with material support in the form of outplacement services and meaningful severance packages is our top priority during this difficult moment.”

Layoffs Shake Striking Distance Studios

Although The Callisto Protocol has generated a devoted following, it received mixed reviews from critics upon release. Regrettably, the game failed to meet Krafton’s sales targets, which created additional challenges for Striking Distance Studios.

The studio reassures that providing outplacement services and considerable severance packages for ex-employees remains a paramount concern. However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first instance where the studio faced employee-related controversies. Following the release of The Callisto Protocol, some employees expressed their disappointment at not being credited for their contributions. However, a post-launch update rectified this issue by restoring the omitted development credits.

The mention of “future projects” in the studio’s statement hints at ongoing efforts to create something new. Nonetheless, it’s evident that Striking Distance Studios’ debut title did not have the smooth start they had envisioned.

The Callisto Protocol is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
