Remember the days of playing QWOP, where even moving forward felt like a remarkable accomplishment? Well, that feeling is finally back! Bennett Foddy, creator of QWOP, Gabe Cuzzillo of Ape Out, and Maxi Boch have unveiled their new game, Baby Steps, which is effectively a 3D version of the classic limb-controlling game. In Baby Steps, you play as Nate, a couch potato who is transported to a mountain and forced to re-learn walking to find meaning in his wasted life. However, this can be challenging because one wrong step could potentially lead to falling off a cliff.
As you might expect from Foddy, who is responsible for hits like Ape Out, VVVVVV, and Getting Over It, the game is irreverent. You might have to awkwardly explain yourself after knocking over a cairn, or endure the gaze of a donkey as you slide down a hill. The production values are significantly higher than in past titles, with Baby Steps boasting an ever-changing soundtrack made up of 420 beats and vibes, as well as a “fully dynamic onesie soilage system.”
While Devolver is set to release Baby Steps in 2024 for PC and PlayStation 5, this is not your typical triple-A blockbuster game. Looks can be deceiving, though. After all, Getting Over It featured a surprisingly thoughtful discussion of failure as you tumbled off ledges. Even at this early stage, Baby Steps makes a not-so-subtle commentary on people who spend more time watching the adventures of others than living their own.
So, get ready to take some Baby Steps and enjoy the unique experience brought to you by Foddy, Cuzzillo, and Boch. Catch up on all the news from Summer Game Fest right here!
