The Pokémon TCG immerses collectors and players into the Tera Pokémon ex era with the Scarlet & Violet base set, featuring two familiar Kanto species.

The Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon TCG has commenced. Following the conclusion of Sword & Shield, the Scarlet & Violet era began in March 2023, focusing on the ninth generation of Pokémon games and the new region: Paldea. The journey started with the Scarlet & Violet base set, officially released in the United States on March 31st, 2023. This set introduced significant and enduring changes to the hobby. Notably, the card borders now match the silver borders found in Japanese releases. Additionally, each pack now guarantees at least one holo-rare and two reverse holos. The standout feature of this era is the lowercase ex, showcasing a double holographic pattern with a horizontal shine and starry sparkle. Full Art exs now sport a green, foil outline around the Pokémon. The Secret Rare section of expansions going forward includes Full Arts, Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rare exs, Full Art Trainers, Special Illustration Rare Trainers, and Gold Hyper Rares. In today’s spotlight on the Scarlet & Violet base set, we explore the Water-type cards.

Scarlet & Violet captures the essence of Kanto with the Magikarp line, culminating in a powerful Tera Gyarados. Magikarp, illustrated by KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA, appears endearingly derpy as it aimlessly swims deeper into the sea before evolving and transforming into the formidable Tera Gyarados ex, bursting out of the water. Tera Gyrados ex is one of two standard Tera Pokémon ex cards in the set, the other being Arcanine. This showcases the Pokémon TCG’s strategy of starting slow with familiar Kanto Tera types, before venturing into new territories with future sets. The artwork for Tera Gyrados ex is created by the longstanding Ultra Rare/Doubel Rare contributor, 5ban Graphics.
