Pokémon TCG Japan’s Ruler of the Black Flame features a Dark-type Tera Charizard ex that will be a collectible card for Zard fans.

We are excited to share information and card reveals for the upcoming expansion of the Scarlet & Violet era in Pokémon TCG Japan. Ruler of the Black Flame, set to release on July 28th, will feature 108 cards, excluding Secret Rare cards. One of the highlights of this expansion is the Dark-type Tera Charizard ex, a must-have for Charizard enthusiasts. What’s unique about this set is the introduction of Tera Pokémon with a different typing from their standard forms. This distinction is particularly evident in the Dark-type Tera Charizard ex, as well as the Fire-type Tera Eiscue ex and Electric-type Tera Tyranitar ex. This set, known as Scarlet & Violet – Obsidian Flames in English, will be released in August 2023. Ruler of the Black Flame will also blend with cards from the upcoming Japanese ex Starter Decks and other Japanese sets from this year. Let’s now explore the major Tera Pokémon ex featured in this set.

The showcase of Ruler of the Black Flame is undoubtedly the Dark-type Tera Charizard ex. Renowned artist 5ban Graphics, known for their contribution to Ultra Rares (now referred to as Double Rares in various languages), beautifully portrays this fierce creature. It’s worth noting that Tera Pokémon ex, like this Charizard, maintain the Energy requirements for their attacks based on their original typing, while their weakness typing shifts to the Tera type. Previously, Japanese sets typically featured only one Tera Pokémon card, but Ruler of the Black Flame expands on this concept.

Japanese sets often provide insights into what we can expect in English-language sets, so keep an eye on our coverage. Stay tuned for previews of Scarlet & Violet cards and updates on everything related to Pokémon TCG here at Bleeding Cool.
