The directors of the A24 film, Talk to Me, are revealing how they made revisions to one scene that was deemed too terrifying for its theatrical release.
When it comes to modern horror films, audiences have come to expect visceral and haunting scenes that linger long after the credits roll, particularly in slow-burn A24 genre films. Now, the directors of Talk to Me are discussing how they had to tone down a particular scene for its theatrical release.
However, if you’re seeking even more horror, be warned that pausing during this specific scene might provide further terror!

A Scene Too Terrifying for Talk to Me
During a conversation at SXSW with Collider (now published to coincide with the film’s release), the two directors of the horror film Talk to Me discuss the eerie surprises that were added back into a scene featuring Mia after needing to make revisions. Michael Philippou explains, “It was originally showcasing a much more intense depiction of hell,” while co-director Danny Philippou adds, “The sequence depicted the depravity and extreme horrors of hell in a way that was ultimately too overwhelming. Even our producer warned us that it would not pass the censors and receive an NC-17 rating. It was an incredibly graphic and lengthy sequence, so we made the decision to trim it down and offer only a brief glimpse. However, we did hide some frames within that sequence. So if you watch closely, you’ll catch some highly intense imagery.”
For those unfamiliar with this chilling, next-gen horror film, the official plot description for Talk to Me reads, “When a group of friends discovers how to summon spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them crosses boundaries and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.”
Talk to Me is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
