Suggestion of U.S. Pricing for Non-Premium 2023 Razr as New Models are Revealed in India

Motorola’s recent unveiling of the Razr+ in the U.S. on June 1st captivated the market with its sleek clamshell foldable design. The new model boasts a 3.6-inch QuickView display, a significant upgrade from its predecessor’s 2.7-inch external display. Complementing this is its impressive 6.9-inch internal p-OLED screen, featuring a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2640 and a fast 165Hz refresh rate. The device is equipped with a 3800mAh battery that promises all-day and all-night usage. Priced at $999, the Razr+ is available at attractive deals from various U.S. carriers.

The Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 40 are the latest Motorola clamshell models outside the U.S.

Outside of the U.S., Motorola introduces two Razr models: the premium Razr+ is known as the Razr 40 Ultra, while a more affordable variant is marketed as the Razr 40. It is highly likely that Motorola will launch the standard Razr, which is less expensive, in the U.S. By unveiling the Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 40 in India, we gain insights into their pricing strategy for the American market.

According to insights from Android Authority, the Razr 40 Ultra is priced at Rs 89,999 in India, which translates to approximately $1,098, slightly higher than the $999 retail price of the Razr+ in the U.S. Based on this, the Razr 40’s price in India of Rs 59,999 (approximately $732) suggests a price range of $649-$699 for the Razr (2023) in the U.S.

Exploring the Razr (2023) or Razr 40

Distinguishing the premium and non-premium Razr models is the absence of the expansive QuickView display in the more affordable version, which is replaced by a ticker-style external screen. This alone could be a compelling reason to opt for the Razr+/Razr 40 Ultra. The QuickView display aims to provide users with as much information as possible without opening the clamshell phone, a convenience not replicated by the smaller external screen on the Razr (2023)/Razr 40.

The non-premium Razr model features a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, ensuring optimal performance. While the internal p-OLED display measures 6.9 inches, the refresh rate is slightly reduced to 144 times per second. Another significant difference lies in the silicon, with the more affordable model powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. Configuration options include 8GB RAM/128GB UFS 2.2 storage, 8GB RAM/256GB storage, and 12GB RAM/256GB storage for added flexibility.

On the camera front, the device boasts a Primary camera with a 64MP sensor and an Ultra-wide camera supported by a 13MP sensor. Additionally, a 32MP selfie snapper is integrated into the internal screen, and a 4200mAh battery provides sufficient power. The device offers protection against sweat, light rain, and splashes.

As for the availability of the lower-priced Razr in the U.S., Motorola has yet to disclose any details. It is possible that the delay is part of a strategy to maximize sales of the premium variant before introducing a more affordable alternative to the U.S. market. However, Motorola needs to consider the impact of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, rumored to be released in late July or early August, as it may pose a threat to the premium model.

Samsung has also enlarged the external “cover display” on the Galaxy Z Flip 5, expanding it from 1.9 inches to 3.4 inches. The presence of front cameras gives the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s larger external display a folder-like shape, which should not significantly hinder users.

The clamshell design has gained popularity in the realm of foldable smartphones. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 emerged as top-selling models in 2021 and 2022, respectively. This preference for foldables can likely be attributed to the appeal of having a pocket-friendly device that can be effortlessly opened to reveal a larger screen, as opposed to handling a tablet-sized display at all times.
