PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – The Vyve Broadband substation caught on fire and burned to the ground before sunrise today leaving parts of Pickens County with no internet connection.
The exact location is roughly half-way between Carrolton and Reform on Highway 17. Directly across the highway from Stansel Baptist Church. A Vyve Broadband official says they’re not sure what started the fire but feel certain it was not intentional.
The fire happened around 2:30 this morning and affected the local internet connection starting with Carrolton City Hall and hitting the College Career Center, Bevill State Community College, Pickens Academy and other government businesses, according to Carrolton Mayor Mickey Walker.
“We got some hotspots we’re trying to go through with First Net we get our service through. Our police chief has got a hot spot box that he can bring over here at city hall to help us out some. Yeah, we can still do business. We just have to do it like we used to, get you back to understanding how important the old ways is,” says Carrolton mayor Mickey Walker.
The company has since put in a place a temporary substation and a company official says they will work 24-7 to restore full internet connectivity as quick as they can.
