Study suggests intermittent fasting and calorie restriction equally effective for weight loss

A recent study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that time-restricted eating, also known as intermittent fasting, can produce weight loss results comparable to traditional calorie counting methods. The study found that participants who followed an 8-hour eating window experienced improved insulin sensitivity compared to those who ate their calories over 10 or more hours a day.

Obesity is a global health concern, with over a billion people affected worldwide. It is associated with an increased risk of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.

While traditional weight loss methods rely on calorie counting, time-restricted eating has gained popularity as an easier-to-follow approach. However, its long-term effectiveness has remained uncertain.

In this new research, scientists from the University of Illinois Chicago studied 90 adults with obesity to compare the effectiveness of intermittent fasting and calorie restriction for weight control and reducing heart disease risk. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 8-hour time-restricted eating without calorie counting, calorie reduction, or no change in calorie consumption over a 10-hour or more eating window.

The study found that participants in the time-restricted eating group consumed 425 fewer calories per day and lost around 4.5kg (10lb) more than the control group after one year. The calorie-restricted group ate 405 fewer calories per day and lost about 5.5kg (12lb) more. Both intervention groups showed a high adherence to their respective approaches.

The researchers believe that this study’s findings can inform better clinical decisions by considering individual preferences rather than simply prescribing a one-size-fits-all diet. They also emphasize the importance of access to dieticians in making healthier food choices.

Given the variability in weight loss among participants, further research is needed to determine which individuals would benefit most from each approach.
