The $100 million blockbuster thriller starring two of Hollywood’s A-list superstars, which earned nearly $280 million at the box office and secured three Golden Globe nominations, can objectively be called a success on every level. However, that only scratches the surface of The Tourist.
Behind the scenes, the romantic cross-continental adventure was plagued with issues. Initially set to be directed by Lasse Hallström with Sam Worthington and Charlize Theron in the lead roles, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck stepped in at the last moment to rewrite the screenplay in two weeks prior to shooting with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie taking top billing.
The film received a critical panning for its various flaws, but still secured a trio of Golden Globe nominations. Despite not being a comedy, the film was shortlisted for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Actor in the corresponding categories, leading to widespread confusion and accusations that studio politics and favoritism towards the big-name stars were the real reason.
While it may not be a very good or enjoyable movie, the combined magnitude of Depp and Jolie continues to attract streamers. According to FlixPatrol, the movie has made its way onto the iTunes worldwide watch-list, even though its off-camera history is far more fascinating.
