The CEO of Reddit, Steve Huffman, has finally addressed the backlash resulting from the company’s unpopular API changes. These changes have forced several third-party Reddit apps to shut down. Huffman promised improvements to Reddit’s own app but seemed reluctant to make concessions on pricing and other issues that has angered the community. In his Ask Me Anything (AMA) post, Huffman acknowledged some missteps in the company’s API rollout but avoided tackling more complicated questions regarding the company’s relationship with third-party developers. According to Huffman, “Reddit needs to be a self-sustaining business” and that the company “can no longer subsidize commercial entities that require large-scale data use.” Although Huffman stated that Reddit was working to improve its own app, he did not address the pricing issue or the upcoming blackout by thousands of subreddits, protesting the API changes. At the end of Huffman’s AMA, nearly all of the Reddit team’s answers were heavily downvoted, indicating dissatisfaction among the Reddit community.
