Starfield’s Adoring Fan explained | PCGamesN

Who is the Starfield Adoring Fan? By Azura, he’s back! Long-time Bethesda fans tuning into the Starfield Direct will have been both delighted and dismayed at the surprise reveal of the Adoring Fan – perhaps one of the most infamous NPCs in the studio’s history.

It’s been almost two decades since the Adoring Fan first stalked us around Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. However, if you’re completely new to the nagging sycophancy of the Adoring Fan, you might be wondering exactly who he is, how to get him, and what skills he can offer in Starfield ahead of the release date. Unlike the Adoring Fan, we’re here to help.

Who is the Adoring Fan?

The Adoring Fan is an NPC that follows you around relentlessly, turning up in the unlikeliest of places to tell you just how wonderful you are.

It might sound like a good time on paper, but his relentless adoration quickly wears thin. However, he also periodically showers you with gifts while traveling alongside you – so perhaps his incessant chattering is worthwhile in the long run.

We also have confirmation that Adoring Fan voice actor Craig Sechler is reprising his role for Starfield, meaning that players who missed out on his original performance in Oblivion can get the authentic experience… in space.

How to get the Adoring Fan in Starfield

You can get the Starfield Adoring Fan after selecting the Hero Worshipped trait during character creation.

Starfield traits are entirely optional, so if you’re an Oblivion fan that’s filled with horror at the prospect of re-experiencing the Adoring Fan in the space game, then you’ll be relieved to know that he’s easily avoided.

Once you have the Hero Worshipped Trait, the Adoring Fan will show up randomly on your journey across the Settled Systems, whether you’re exploring bustling Starfield cities or remote planets.

However, when he’ll see fit to grace you with his exceedingly annoying presence is currently unclear. We know from experience that the Adoring Fan appears shortly after you become Grand Champion of the Arena in Oblivion, so we wouldn’t be surprised if we have to perform a similar feat of strength before we eventually cross paths with him in Starfield. After all, how could he heap his endless praise upon you if you haven’t done anything of note, yet?

The player levels his gun at the Starfield Adoring Fan while his back is turned, too preoccupied with taking in the landscape to notice the threat.

How to get rid of the Adoring Fan

It’s highly likely that you can get rid of the Adoring Fan in Starfield by killing him.

His short cameo in the Starfield Direct concludes with the player character taking aim at his back, though the clip cuts away before they pull the trigger.

Starfield lead animator Rick Vicens hinted that attempting to silence the Adoring Fan might come at the expense of your Hero Worshipped trait.

While you could kill the Adoring Fan in Oblivion, he wouldn’t stay dead for long – eventually, he’d respawn where he was killed, and eventually catch up to you. In fact, the only surefire way you could get rid of him was to lock him out of the open-world game by trapping him in an instanced location. However, it seems likely that once you kill him in Starfield, he’ll be gone for good.

Adoring Fan skills

The Adoring Fan’s skills are Scavenging, Concealment, and Weight Lifting, making him the perfect pack mule while on the hunt for valuable loot.

Starfield companions are a useful way of gaining access to additional skills beyond the ones you selected for your character, and getting them to tag along on missions can certainly come in handy. Judging by his skills and his one-track verbal diarrhea, the Adoring Fan won’t be of much use in social situations, but these skills make him overwhelmingly suited to planet exploration.

According to the Starfield Direct, the Adoring Fan will likely appear as a crew member rather than a dedicated Starfield companion, but we can’t rule out a unique quest line just yet… we might even be able to romance him.

Now that you know what awaits you after recruiting Starfield’s Adoring Fan, check out what else awaits you during Starfield character creation, including your background and how it can affect your standing with Starfield factions.
