Spotify down: web player not working but iOS and Android app clings on

Hundreds of disgruntled Spotify users have flooded social media to complain about issues with the streaming service, which is currently suffering an outage across the UK and mainland Europe. According to reports from subscribers, the problems seem to only impact the web browser-based player, with the iOS and Android apps still working well. However, this remains unconfirmed as Spotify hasn’t commented on the cause of the outage just yet.

Spotify has confirmed that it’s “aware of some issues” with its streaming service, which is available for free as well as a paid monthly subscription. The firm has a dedicated Twitter account that reports on issues with the service. Following a surge of social media reports, it tweeted: “We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out! We’ll keep you posted.”

According to unconfirmed reports from users, the problem seems to prevent subscribers from streaming music and podcasts on their desktop PCs. It seems to be the web player, which can also be embedded into websites to offer access to playlists and albums, and not the native desktop app which is down for users.

Independent monitor DownDetector, which tracks the status of web apps and streaming services by monitoring mentions across social media, shows a huge spike in reported problems around 8:57pm on January 21, 2021. At its peak, DownDetector was tracking 729 complaints about the issues impacting Spotify every minute.
