Spidops ex is a new Paldean species that debuted in the Pokémon TCG’s Scarlet & Violet base set, marking the beginning of Generation 9.
The Scarlet & Violet era of the Pokémon TCG has commenced. Following the conclusion of Sword & Shield, the Scarlet & Violet era began in March 2023, focusing on the ninth generation of Pokémon games and the new region, Paldea. This era debuted with the Scarlet & Violet base set, officially released in the United States on March 31st, 2023. The base set introduced significant and enduring changes to the hobby. Notably, the card borders now match the silver borders of the Japanese releases. Additionally, each pack now guarantees at least one holo-rare and two reverse holos. The lowercase ex mechanic serves as the signature feature of this era, showcasing a double holographic pattern consisting of a horizontal shine and a starry sparkle. Full Art exs now boast green foil outlines around the Pokémon. Moving forward, the Secret Rare section of expansions will feature Full Arts, Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rare exs, Full Art Trainers, Special Illustration Rare Trainers, and Gold Hyper Rares. In today’s inaugural installment of the Scarlet & Violet base set spotlight, let’s delve into the Grass-type cards in more detail.
Scarlet & Violet features not one or two, but three cards of Tarountula, giving us the opportunity to learn more about this species through its Dex entries:
The ball of threads wrapped around its body is elastic enough to deflect the scythes of Scyther, this Pokémon’s natural enemy.
The thread it secretes from its rear is as strong as wire. The secret behind the thread’s strength is the subject of ongoing research.
Artist Tika Matsuno portrays a cute Tarountula waiting for a friend, while Pani Kobayashi depicts Tarountula climbing on a tree branch during a wintry snowfall. Kouki Saitou, a long-time contributor to the Pokémon TCG and recent creator of the nine-card connecting Art Rares from Crown Zenith, presents the image of Tarountula descending from a tree. Finally, the line-up concludes with a border-breaking Pokémon ex featuring Spidops by takuyoa.
