Sony Confirms Plans to Embrace AI for Movies and TV Shows

Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra discusses the use of AI in upcoming films and TV shows. Says the company is “very focused on AI,” in an official statement.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Vinciquerra made the remarks during an investor conference in Japan on Thursday, May 30. “We’ll be looking at ways to use AI to produce films for theaters and television in more efficient ways, using AI primarily,” Vinciquerra said. Regarding the resolutions that were reached during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, Vinciquerra noted, “The agreements that came out of last year’s strikes and the agreements that will come out of the IATSE and Teamster [negotiations] will define roughly what we do with AI.”

Discussions regarding the potential use of AI in films, television, and other media have been hotly contested by members of the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America, and were key points during negotiations during the 2023 strikes. Since then, multiple studios and projects have been lambasted for their apparent or purported use of generative AI, including the recently released Late Night with the Devil starring David Dastmalchian. Directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes responded to the backlash, explaining that generative AI was used “for three still images which we edited further and ultimately appeared as very brief interstitials in the film.” Though these interstitials were relatively brief, they played a prominent role in the film and were featured as part of the main set’s backdrop.

AI Use Has Generated Backlash

In April, Netflix faced major backlash over accusations of the use of generative AI in the true crime documentary What Jennifer Did. Viewers pointed towards images of the titular Jennifer Pan, who was convicted for her role in a murder-for-hire plot targeting her parents. In several stills from the documentary, viewers pointed towards instances in which Pan’s teach, fingers, and hands all seemed to be adjusted with or touched up by generative AI tools.

DC Comics has also come under fire for the purported use of generative AI in multiple titles. In March, artist and designer James Leech pointed towards the apparent use of generative AI in artist Andrea Sorrentino’s run on Batman. “Now that I’ve read all the issues of Batman that (Andrea Sorrentino) contributed to, I feel like there’s a pretty strong case that AI Art is being used,” Leech stated. “I’d love to be wrong about this, especially as the run has been so great, but it’s hard to avoid.”
