Skype Takes On Zoom With Custom Backgrounds For Video Calls

During this ongoing pandemic, most of the people around the world are frequently using video calls to connect with their friends and family. Looking forward to this opportunity to attract some new users, Skype is adding a few new features and improvements in all of its platforms.

With the latest version of Skype on Windows, Mac, Linux, and the web, you can now add custom backgrounds to your desktop calls. This new capability joins Skype’s long-standing support for blurring your background during a video call.

To customize your Skype background while in a call, follow these steps:

  1. During a call, tap the video button or click the more menu.
  2. Click Choose background effect.
  3. You can Blur the room you’re in currently, choose an image you previously added, or add a new image to customize your background effect.

However, the custom backgrounds don’t work on the Microsoft Store version of the app. You can download the previous version of Skype for Windows from the official site of Skype or use the web version of the service on Windows 10.

The update also makes it easier to share files. “Now you can share files directly from your Mac to your Skype contacts, as well,” Skype says in the release notes.
