Simogo delves into unveiling the enigmatic world of ‘Lorelei and the Laser Eyes’

The process of creating a game usually begins with a mechanic or an input method that developers want to explore, along with a central theme within a specific genre. As the game takes shape, its details and unique elements come together.

For Simogo, the acclaimed Swedish studio behind games like “Device 6,” “Year Walk,” and “Sayonara Wild Hearts,” the creation of their ninth major game, “Lorelei and the Laser Eyes,” started with the name itself.

According to Simogo co-founder Simon Flesser, there wasn’t a single moment of inspiration. He said, “We had the title which we really liked, and from there we have been trying to figure out what laser eyes are.”

“Lorelei and the Laser Eyes” was first introduced in June 2022 through a noir-inspired trailer, hinting at a murder mystery and a world of deception and memories. The trailer showcased a stylish woman with glowing red eyes, navigating through a monochromatic estate.

Simogo has kept many details about “Lorelei” under wraps. The latest trailer mentions the years 1847, 1963, and 2014, suggesting international espionage with a supernatural twist and emphasizing the player’s ability to recognize patterns and solve puzzles.

Here are some key facts about “Lorelei and the Laser Eyes,” as shared by Flesser:

  • It’s a non-linear third-person puzzle adventure.
  • There are nearly 150 puzzles to solve.
  • The game will be available on PC and Switch.
  • It’s set in a surreal memory of a house.

“Lorelei and the Laser Eyes” incorporates shifting mechanics and perspectives in a 3D space, drawing inspiration from Simogo’s successful game “Sayonara Wild Hearts.” It aims to create a mysterious and thought-provoking experience.

Flesser explained, “The project has been transformative to make, which reflects in its themes. Thematically, there are a lot of ideas about stories within stories, stories reflecting each other, memories, dreams, and parallel events and worlds.”

Players will interact with various objects, such as cameras, computers, and locks. They will read passages from books and magazines and even play games within the game itself. The aim is to create an atmosphere where things are not as they seem, instilling a constant feeling of ambivalence and questioning of reality.

Simogo specializes in bending realities and creating surreal and paranormal experiences in their games, such as “Year Walk,” “The Sailor’s Dream,” and “Device 6.”

Flesser believes that blending realities and blurring the lines between fiction and reality can have a profound impact on players. He said, “When [a piece of] media starts talking about our reality as if it is a story within its reality, it ends up becoming more real somehow. It creeps into your head in a very specific way. You become the story.”

While there is no official release date yet, “Lorelei and the Laser Eyes” will be published by Annapurna Interactive and is expected to launch in 2024 for PC and Switch. The game’s second trailer teases players with maze blocks that flash on the screen, leaving the impression that the game has already begun.

One Steam user claims to have translated the maze blocks into a complete thought, suggesting a hidden puzzle. However, Flesser didn’t provide a correct translation, stating simply, “Everything is a puzzle.”
