Sega has decided to step back from its previous blockchain initiatives, expressing concerns about devaluing its valuable gaming properties and stating that the technology has not yet reached its full potential.
In a recent interview, Shuji Utsumi, the co-chief operating officer of the company, explained that while investing in blockchain may have seemed interesting, Sega’s main motivation is to stay ahead of the crowd.
He said, “For most people in the video game industry, the claims made by blockchain advocates may sound extreme, but that’s how the first pioneers have always been. We should never underestimate them,” using a metaphor to describe risk-takers.
However, Sega will be cautious about allowing its biggest franchises to be used in third-party blockchain gaming projects in order to protect the value of its content. Nonetheless, this decision does not affect the current plans for characters from “Three Kingdoms” and “Virtua Fighter” to become non-fungible tokens, or the release of the new “Sangokushi Taisen” blockchain game developed by Double Jump Tokyo.
Sega has also decided to postpone the development of its own blockchain games, at least for the time being. Utsumi expressed criticism towards play-to-earn games, describing them as “boring” and claiming that they take away the fun from gaming.
This shift towards blockchain, NFTs, and web3 is not unique to Sega. Earlier this year, Square Enix announced that its fiscal activities in 2023 would revolve around significant evolution and transformation, with a strong focus on blockchain entertainment. In contrast, Utsumi’s outlook is more cautious, as Sega is currently assessing whether this technology will truly succeed in the gaming industry.
In other gaming news, Capcom has not revealed whether it plans to remake any spinoffs of “Resident Evil” following the immense success of “Resident Evil 4 Remake.”
