Warning: This article contains spoilers for Secret Invasion episode six.
With the acquisition of the X-Men rights, Kevin Feige is in no rush to reintroduce mutants into the MCU. However, he is thoroughly enjoying revisiting the beloved moments from Fox’s X-Men franchise spanning the 1990s to the 2010s. We’ve already seen Patrick Stewart return as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the revival of the X-Men animated series, and the possibility of many Fox legacy stars returning for Deadpool 3.
Given this context, it should come as no surprise that Secret Invasion also pays homage to the X-Men in its finale, despite the episode being widely disappointing. Unlike the obvious ending of Ms. Marvel with its animated show’s theme tune, Secret Invasion presents a clever twist reminiscent of the conclusion to Fox’s acclaimed X-Men film series.
Let’s recall the ending of X2 from 2002. As the President of the United States prepares to address the nation about the mutant threat, the X-Men teleport into the Oval Office. They reveal that they have just saved the world from the genocidal General Stryker. Informed by this revelation, the President delivers a more inclusive message of mutant acceptance.
Although subsequent X-Men films explored a world that harbors fear and hatred towards mutants, the ending of X2 presented hope for humanity’s ability to overcome its worst instincts and coexist peacefully. However, in the darker world of Secret Invasion, the MCU’s President Ritson takes a different path when faced with a similar revelation. Despite Talos sacrificing his life to save him in a previous episode, Ritson interprets the presence of the shapeshifting Skrulls, who share similarities with mutants as beings who appear human and are scattered throughout the population, as a threat to humanity’s survival. Consequently, he delivers a hostile hate speech that ignites a global wave of prejudice and violent vigilantism.
As of now, we do not know when the mutants of Earth-616 will be fully explored (although we have been introduced to a couple, such as Kamala Khan and Namor). However, Ritson’s actions may mean that the MCU’s X-Men face even greater challenges than their Fox counterparts. Unless Ritson’s successor, Harrison Ford himself, can come to their rescue.
