‘Scream 7’ Is Bad News for Another Horror Franchise in Desperate Need of a Relaunch

Horror enthusiasts have finally received the highly anticipated news they’ve been eagerly awaiting since March: Scream 7 is officially happening. While it was expected that the genre’s most enduringly popular franchise would complete its current trilogy, the confirmation is still thrilling. Though it does mean that fans will have to wait even longer for the possibility of a beloved slasher series reaching its third installment.

The most surprising aspect of the Scream 7 announcement is that the Radio Silence filmmakers, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, will not be returning to conclude the trilogy they initiated with 2022’s Scream. Instead, Christopher Landon is taking on the mantle. This choice couldn’t be more suitable, considering Landon’s background in the Paranormal Activity movies and his four previous horror-comedy films, which make him the perfect candidate to steer the ship for the next Scream installment.

Unfortunately, this means that any hopes of seeing another Happy Death Day film materialize in the near future are unlikely. Before directing Netflix’s recent We Have a Ghost and the body-swap slasher Freaky, Landon brought us the unique combination of a Groundhog Day-style time loop scenario and a Scream-esque whodunit slasher mystery with 2017’s Happy Death Day and 2019’s Happy Death Day 2U. Despite the success of HDD for Blumhouse, the second installment didn’t garner as much attention, leading to the halt of plans for a third film, despite Landon having written a treatment for it. However, Landon, producer Jason Blum, and star Jessica Rothe have consistently expressed their interest in continuing Tree Gelbman’s story since then. But with Landon now involved in Scream, potentially as part of multiple movies, it seems like there are currently no immediate plans for another Happy Death Day sequel.

Happy Death Day revolves around its protagonist repeatedly coming back to life, so there is still hope for the franchise. However, for now, its loss is the Scream saga’s gain.
