Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi have developed an innovative adhesive bandage that uses gold nanoparticles to detect immune antibodies in the bloodstream, providing a rapid testing method for COVID-19. These antibodies, known as IgM and IgG, are natural markers of SARS-CoV-2 infection and can help identify infected individuals and track the spread of pandemics. The bandage technology is affordable, easy-to-use, and can be easily modified to detect other pathogenic infections in the future by using specific antigens.
The adhesive bandage test can be applied at home by simply placing it on a pinprick fingertip, similar to a regular bandage. It utilizes gold nanoparticles, which are tiny particles one billionth of a meter in diameter, functionalized with unique antigens that are specific to SARS-CoV-2. These antigens, created using nanotechnology, bind to IgM and IgG antibodies with high sensitivity and specificity, triggering a color change that indicates the individual’s infection status within minutes.
This low-cost, disposable bandage has the potential for large-scale detection and screening, making it suitable for use in various settings, including homes, public facilities, and rural regions with limited access to advanced testing facilities. The research team at NYU Abu Dhabi, led by Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering Mohammad Qasaimeh, detailed the creation of this innovative testing technology in a paper published in the journal Microsystems and Nanoengineering.
According to Muhammedin Deliorman, one of the first authors of the study and a Research Scientist in Qasaimeh’s Group, “This user-friendly test quickly and accurately identifies the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, providing users with critical information about their immune response to the infection.”
The researchers also have plans to explore the potential of this technology in detecting and screening other emerging viral infections. They aim to incorporate biodegradable porous microneedles into the bandage for efficient finger pricking. Imen Boumar, another first author of the study, stated, “Our goal is to contribute to improved diagnostics and help individuals with their health management, ultimately enhancing our ability to combat and control infectious diseases globally.”
Qasaimeh emphasized the importance of real-time screening for viral infections, stating that it can play a crucial role in preventing future outbreaks and pandemics by enabling early detection. By combining the adhesive bandage tests with smartphone readouts and dedicated mobile apps, it is possible to generate location-based heat maps that allow for the early identification of infected individuals, including those who are asymptomatic. This proactive approach can significantly reduce the spread of the virus and prevent it from reaching a larger population.
