Samsung Managed to Sell 3 Billion Phones in the Last Decade, Beating Apple and the Rest of the Competition

Samsung is an absolute giant when it comes to the smartphone market. To further add credibility to that, new market research has surfaced describing how the South Korean firm has sold an impressive 3 billion smartphones, marking a huge milestone for the company and making it very difficult for other brands to surpass it.

Samsung’s sales numbers are more than the combined numbers from Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo, making it a force to be reckoned with

According to data from IDC, in the last decade, Samsung exceeded Apple’s sales by 33%. This means that the company sold 2.93 billion phones, whereas Apple sold 2.2 billion during the same period. The shipment data that IDC used was between Q1 2014 and Q1 2024.

Samsung not only managed to surpass Apple by a good margin, but it also had more sales than the combined sales of Xiaomi, Vivo, and Huawei. While these companies are enjoying their success, it is safe to say that their results are not on the same level as what the Galaxy maker is able to achieve.

The one thing that makes it even more interesting is that Samsung, for some time, has been experiencing an annual decrease in smartphone shipments, and this decline has been happening for some time now. Despite that, however, it still retains its position as far as the sales are concerned.

The study also reveals that Samsung experienced its best year in 2015, the same time the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 were released. The Galaxy S6 was a big deal for Samsung since it was the first phone from the company to offer the now ubiquitous glass sandwich form factor. In 2015 alone, the company sold 320.9 million devices, while Apple sold 231.5 million phones.

Samsung’s weakest year was 2022 when it sold 258.2 million phones, but it was still ahead of Apple, which sold 225.3 million smartphones.

Samsung’s current stance shows that the company is going through a recovery phase. The Galaxy S24 series was a massive success for the South Korean firm, and the company has some really exciting products lined up for the rest of the year, as well. Of course, we are just at the start of the second quarter, so we are going to get a lot more information in the coming months, but we will be sure to let you know how the performance goes.

Samsung and Apple have always been two sides of the same coin. Even though both companies struggle for the top spot, it is nice to see that the competition between these companies is still healthy and strong.
