Samsung, the renowned Korean smart devices manufacturer, has announced its plan to produce its premium flagship devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, in India to cater to the local market. The launch of these high-end devices, along with attractive offers for pre-booking, is scheduled for August 18, and pre-orders will begin at midnight on July 27.
J B Park, President and CEO of Samsung SouthWest Asia, stated that both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be manufactured at the company’s factory in Noida, India.
Techarc, a leading market research and analysis firm, predicts that foldable smartphones, including flip phones, will account for over 1.8% of total smartphone revenues by 2023. This estimate translates to over 635,000 foldable smartphones being sold in India that year, representing less than 0.5% of the total sales volume projected for that period.
Samsung began manufacturing the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 in India four months after their initial release. Raju Pullan, Senior Vice President of Samsung India’s Mobile Business, emphasized that Indian consumers will now have the privilege of owning locally manufactured Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 devices right from the start.
He further stated, “Indian consumers seek products that offer value for money, fulfill aspirations, and enhance their overall experience. This sentiment extends even to rural markets. By addressing these needs, we anticipate strong adoption of new product categories.”
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is priced at Rs. 1,54,999 for the 256GB storage variant, while the 512GB and 1TB models are priced at Rs. 1,64,999 and Rs. 1,84,999 respectively. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is priced at Rs. 99,999 for the 256GB storage model and Rs. 1,09,999 for the 512GB storage variant.
Prabhu Ram, Head of the Industry Intelligence Group at CyberMedia Research (CMR), emphasized that the latest fifth-generation models of the Galaxy Fold and Flip series are more refined and durable, making them appealing to a wider range of consumers.
Ram stated, “Based on our research at CMR, the shipments of foldable smartphones in India are expected to grow by over 65% year-on-year. While new players have entered the foldable market with innovative offerings, Samsung holds an advantage with its brand recognition and market leadership.”
Counterpoint Research, another market research and analysis firm, projects that global foldable smartphone shipments will reach 101.5 million units in 2027, up from 78.6 million in 2026. The report suggests that Samsung and Apple will dominate this segment. The firm predicts Apple’s debut in the foldable smartphone market in 2025.
As part of its product lineup, Samsung will also introduce the Galaxy Tab S9 series, ranging in price from Rs. 72,999 to Rs. 1,33,999, and the Galaxy Watch 6 series, starting at Rs. 29,999, simultaneously with its new foldable devices.
According to a market research firm, Samsung secured a 20% market share in the Indian smartphone market during the January-March 2023 quarter. The company also led in 5G shipments, accounting for 24% of the market.
