After the launch of Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the Samsung Galaxy S10 has gained the attention of people. It is rumored to launch early next year, either at CES 2019 in Las Vegas or at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona. Some of the interesting details about the upcoming S-series smartphone has also been recently popping out into the internet. As per the latest report, Samsung will also take the AI support into their flagship phones.
The chipset the will power the Galaxy S10 is expected to come with a dedicated NPU for AI-based tasks, the Samsung’s Exynos chip. A neural processing unit will allow for more powerful artificial intelligence and machine learning applications on the device, making it capable of handling AI-related tasks on the device without needing some power from the main processor. It is a good step for Samsung if we were to think about its possibilities.
The leak came from a China-based leakster that has come across a purported LinkedIn profile of an ex-Samsung Senior Hardware Design Engineer. He mentioned his work on Samsung’s second generation NPU design.
“Samsung’s second generation NPU design (December, 2017 – March, 2018): Responsible for top-level modelling NPU in SystemC. Involved in architectural changes of NPU for performance and power optimization. Designed micro-architecture of units in NPU which performs: activation function, pooling, padding, multiplication & accumulation.”, he said on its post.
However, the authenticity of this profile hasn’t been independently verified. But it seems to be true as Samsung already has a first generation NPU, but it hasn’t been using it. Its rivals like Huawei are already shipping their devices with SoCs that have dedicated NPUs that’s making their devices cope up with the modern needs, so it is just right to think that it’s time for Samsung to do the same.
There is no further available information yet about the specs of this chip. Samsung seems not to reveal anything about its flagship until it makes an official announcement. If the leaks will real, the Galaxy S10 will be the first handset to ship with this powerful processor.
