Samsung Galaxy Note 20: How to Fix its Problems

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are currently the crème de la crème of flagship Android smartphones. Ultra-fast performance, distinct premium design, exceptional cameras, fantastic display, and a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen makes the Galaxy Note 20 lineup one of the best in the series.
Despite being flawless on paper, Samsung’s latest flagship entries have a handful of problems. Now it’s worth mentioning that not every Galaxy Note 20 and its expensive sibling suffer from the same issues, but some of you might find them on your particular unit.
Thankfully, most of these issues can be resolved quickly. This guide will walk you through some of the common Samsung Galaxy Note 20 / Note 20 Ultra problems and tell you how to fix them easily.

1. Green tint issue

Nowadays, most Samsung phones come with their Super AMOLED displays, providing the brightest, punchiest, and sharpest image quality in the industry. The Galaxy Note 20 series is no exception in that regard. However, some owners have been experiencing green tint issues on their particular Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra units.
The problem arises only when the display brightness is lowered below a certain threshold, with the green tint being most visible on a gray background. Both Snapdragon and Exynos variants of the devices are reportedly suffering from the same issue.
Samsung is apparently aware of this problem and currently working on a software fix. The temporary solution, for now, is to keep the display brightness at a higher level.
Though if you see the green tint regardless of the brightness level or color mode, consider visiting a nearby Samsung Service Center or requesting a replacement.

2. Washed-out colors on the home screen

Some Galaxy Note 20 Ultra owners have encountered a weird issue where the home screen would look completely washed out for no reason. This is definitely a software bug, and it’s likely related to the wallpaper setting. All you have to do is go to your Wallpaper settings by long-pressing on the home screen, then turn off the “Apply Dark Mode to wallpaper” option.
Alternatively, you can switch to Light mode until Samsung rolls out a patch to fix the UI bug. However, note that it will end up consuming more battery than usual.

3. Edge lighting doesn’t work as expected

Edge lighting has been one of the key highlights of Samsung phones ever since they introduced curved displays. Galaxy Note 20 and its sibling also have edge lighting, but some users have complained that the feature doesn’t work correctly. It fails to alert about incoming notifications despite enabling all the proper settings.
Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can follow to make edge lighting work as intended:

  • Go to the Settings app and find “Edge Lighting” settings from the top search bar. Tap Choose Apps once you are on the following menu, then pick the apps from the list you want to receive edge lighting notifications for.
  • If you have disabled UI animations from Developer Options, go back there and set the Animator duration scale to a minimum of 0.5x.
  • In case you are using a microSD card from an older Samsung device, we recommend backing up your essential data and reformatting the card to fix the issue. Chances are some configuration files on the external storage are conflicting with your Note 20’s system settings.
  • Until Samsung releases an official fix, consider using Edge Lighting+ in the Good Lock Suite.

4. Random vibrations

There are multiple reasons why your Galaxy Note 20 is vibrating at random times, making a short buzz similar to when you take out the S Pen. The common solution is to restart the device, but the problem may arise again. Here are some other potential fixes:

  • In case you are using a case for your phone, take it off and see if the random vibrations persist.
  • Go to Settings > Sound and vibration > System sound/vibration control and disable Touch interaction.
  • If you have the edge screen feature enabled, head over to Settings > Display > Edge screen > Edge panels > Handle settings, then disable the “Vibrate when handle is touched” option.
  • Factory reset your phone and don’t restore any settings from your Samsung account. Instead, we advise you to set up your phone manually as this particular issue is associated with a software bug.

5. Swipe gestures don’t work

There are reported instances where a Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra won’t register swipe gestures, especially when using a third-party launcher. Check out the following solutions below:

  • Go to Settings > Display > Navigation bar, enable swipe gestures, and check if you can access the “More options” section. If it’s inaccessible to you, you are most likely using a third-party launcher that doesn’t support swipe gestures.
Thus, your only option is to look out for a different launcher that supports gesture navigation or switch back to the default one.
  • Alternatively, install the One Hand Operation + app from the Google Play Store or Galaxy App Store to customize the swipe gestures on your device. If set up properly, you should be able to get the gesture navigation working with third-party launchers.

6. Unexpected reboots

Quite a few Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra owners have been recently facing random reboots. This peculiar problem is also imminent when using swipe gestures. Here are the solutions:

  • Download and install the One Hand Operation + app from the Play Store to reconfigure the swipe gestures individually. It might also help you pinpoint which swipe gesture is causing your phone to reboot.
  • If you don’t have gesture-based navigation enabled, the unexpected restarts are likely caused by a rogue app installed on your device. To check whether that’s the case, boot your phone into Safe Mode, then uninstall the apps you most recently downloaded.

To boot out of Safe Mode, simply restart your phone from the Power menu.

7. Fingerprint scanner problems

Samsung’s new under-display fingerprint scanner is much faster and more accurate than the ones found on the previous-gen devices. Though some have found it quite unreliable on the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra phones, it can be improved in the following ways:

  • Visit the Settings > Biometrics and security > Fingerprints menu and remove the fingerprint(s) you previously registered. After that, re-register your fingerprints once again. You can also improve the accuracy by registering the same fingerprint twice.
  • If you have a screen protector or tempered glass applied to your phone’s screen, consider removing it to get the best possible fingerprint scan.

8. S Pen problems

The S Pen is what separates the Galaxy Note series from Samsung’s regular S series of flagship phones. With each release, the built-in stylus has received significant updates in terms of functionality. While the S Pen is at its best on the Note 20 lineup, some owners have encountered a few problems with it.

  • If you have put a wallet case on your phone that has magnets, remove it. It’s one of the most common reasons for the S Pen to not work on specific areas of the screen.
  • A few users have complained that they have to put extra pressure on the screen for the S Pen to work. In this case, replacing the tip of the stylus might fix the problem. However, you probably should ask for a replacement if that doesn’t help.
  • In cases where the on-screen pointer is few millimeters off the S Pen marker, dial *#2663# and tap the WACOM FW UPDATE option to ensure the S Pen firmware is updated.

Ask for a replacement if these problems occur

The above problems can be mainly addressed with software updates. That said, if your Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra has a hardware issue, you must file a replacement. Here are a few known problems:

  • Some Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra units, particularly the Exynos variant, have been heating up quite a bit even during regular usage.
  • There’s a problem known as “Black screen of death” where the Note 20’s screen goes blank even though it still receives calls and notifications and allows you to use DeX. Force rebooting the device several times might help, but it’s a known hardware issue.
  • If you get the “Camera failed” error message every time you open the Camera app, it probably is a hardware-related problem.
When rebooting or factory resetting the device doesn’t work out, your best bet is to get your Note 20 or Note 20 Ultra checked in the nearby Samsung Service Center.
  • The devices switch between 3G, 4G LTE, and 5G automatically based on the cellular reception quality by default. If yours seem to disconnect from the network instead, reboot your device to fix the problem. When it isn’t fixable, you will be better off asking for a replacement.
