In the 1990s, id Software was the prominent gaming company responsible for introducing the world to Doom and Quake. John Carmack and John Romero, two of the company’s founding members, achieved great recognition in their field.
However, since Romero’s departure from id in 1996 after Quake 1, the two Johns have not collaborated on another project. And if you had hopes of a reunion, Carmack has pretty much dismissed that idea.
@romero ‘s autobiography is out, filled with tons of details about the old days. To be completely clear — I wish him the best!
To preempt the inevitable question, no, we aren’t planning to make a new game together ???? https://t.co/j0NAvQeDPc

In a recent post on his Twitter page, the former Doom developer commended Romero on the release of his autobiography, “Doom Guy: A Life in First Person.” Carmack then addressed the inevitable question about a potential collaboration between the two programmers.
And never the Johns shall meet
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Carmack clearly states, “we aren’t planning to make a new game together.” However, there seems to be no animosity between the two, as it is said in a good-natured manner.
Many people may have held onto hope that something Doom-esque (or any project involving the legendary developers) would materialize, especially after a recent Reddit AMA featuring Romero.
In response to a question, Romero mentioned that if they had approached things differently during the start of Quake, they could have stayed together. He also mentioned discussions of options with Carmack, which are detailed in his book.
While John Romero continues to be active in the development world (he appears to be in talks for a new first-person shooter through a major publisher), John Carmack has largely moved on from video game creation. He was a key figure at Oculus VR until 2022 and now focuses on artificial general intelligence (AGI) at Keen Technologies.
