T-Mobile has commenced the deployment of its latest 5G technology, which utilizes carrier aggregation to combine four distinct 5G channels into a single connection. This advancement enables speeds of up to 3.3Gbps, surpassing the capabilities of mmWave 5G. Verizon and AT&T heavily promote mmWave 5G for its high speeds, but its range and device support are limited, making it susceptible to obstacles like trees and buildings.
The four channels T-Mobile employs consist of repurposed 1,900MHz spectrum from T-Mobile’s and Sprint’s discontinued 3G networks, along with two 2.5GHz channels and 600MHz. While the rollout is already operational in select areas, T-Mobile intends to make it available nationwide in the near future, although the specific locations remain undisclosed.
According to Senior Communications Manager Justin Paulsen, there are no specific requirements or speed limitations to access the aggregated channels. However, only users with Samsung Galaxy S23 devices, featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem found in the OnePlus 11 5G, can currently benefit from the enhanced connection.
AT&T and Verizon are also implementing similar upgrades. AT&T announced earlier this year that it had combined two upload channels, while Verizon reported achieving upload speeds exceeding 1Gbps and download speeds of up to 4.3Gbps in its testing. However, T-Mobile appears to be the first major US carrier to introduce this technology in real-world usage. Last year, the company reached the 3Gbps throughput milestone on a live, standalone 5G network, a feat unmatched by other cell service providers.
Ulf Ewaldsson, T-Mobile’s President of Technology, emphasized the company’s distinction as the sole provider with a standalone 5G network capable of delivering groundbreaking features like four-carrier aggregation.
