On June 16, 2023, The Flash will premiere in theaters. The movie, directed by Andy Muschietti, offers a fresh and funny take on the classic superhero. Muschietti’s clear love for the character is evident in the many unique action scenes and twisty time-travel plot, which never loses sight of Barry Allen’s emotional journey. While the story is laden with fan service and the third act feels unwieldy, The Flash remains an entertaining superhero film and one of DC’s better recent efforts.
Loosely adapted from the Flashpoint comic event, The Flash follows Barry’s journey to use his newfound time-travel abilities to undo the murder of his mother when he was a child. This leads to two versions of Barry Allen, two Batmans, and two versions of DC movie continuities colliding in a morality play that explores the consequences of Barry’s selfish actions.
Despite the film’s title, there’s a lot of Batman in The Flash, with unnecessarily long Batman action sequences and numerous references to the Tim Burton Batman films. However, these elements never overshadow Barry’s story. The two Batmans are contrasted to great effect, with Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight lamenting that scars make us who we are, and Michael Keaton’s Caped Crusader admitting the fantasy of undoing all that pain. Affleck, in particular, seems more comfortable than ever as Batman and Bruce Wayne.
Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, unfortunately, feels like a plot device rather than a fully fleshed-out character. However, actor Calle manages to make an impression with her disillusioned Kara Zor-El, who holds a grudge against humanity.
The Flash offers a true blockbuster-style showcase of the hero’s signature powers. Barry Allen’s super speed is rendered in a way that makes you feel the Gs from the first time he takes off. The film also offers a new slow-motion speedster sequence that gets credit for its inventiveness.
Returning to the era of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is strange but works to The Flash’s advantage as Barry begins to notice how things have changed in this timeline. The movie feels like a love letter to the Snyderverse, playing with the many toys the DCEU has introduced over the years. The ambitious and unwieldy third act succeeds in keeping Barry’s arc at the heart of it all.
Ezra Miller excels in his double role, offering two dramatically different looks at the same character. The off-beat humor adds a delightful touch, upending superhero story ideas into laugh-out-loud moments. Despite a distracting look to the time-travel scenes, The Flash remains a fun, entertaining superhero movie with heart.
