Review of ‘I’m a Virgo’: Boots Riley’s Exceptional Coming-of-Age Masterpiece

During the summer blockbuster season, studios are known to showcase their bigger franchises, especially superhero IPs, often overshadowing smaller projects based on original concepts. However, Amazon’s latest show, I’m a Virgo, from writer/director Boots Riley, takes a different approach. This genre-bending series follows the story of Cootie, a 13-foot-tall, Black teenager from Oakland whose love for corporate-owned IPs helps him cope with his sheltered existence. The show challenges audiences to question why they are drawn to big-screen spectacles and what they are truly missing out on.

While Cootie’s size and strength are the first things highlighted about his character, there is so much more to him than meets the eye. Raised in secret by his aunt and uncle, Cootie’s gigantism is a metaphor for the struggles Black children face while growing up. The show explores the idea of Black children being robbed of their childhoods due to society’s perceptions of them as older and more deserving of punishment. But, with Cootie’s endless curiosity and kind heart, he manages to connect with others and find his place in the world.

As Cootie’s world opens up, the show delves into the harsh realities of capitalism and how it disproportionately affects people like him. The series gets heavy and grim in its critiques of society, but it never loses its whimsical charm. The show’s practical effects and unique visuals are a testament to the power of art and imagination.

While the series does lose steam towards the end, it remains a triumph of imagination and storytelling. With just seven half-hour episodes, I’m a Virgo is a summer gem that’s easy to breeze through in a weekend. Its thought-provoking themes and unique visuals make it a must-watch for anyone looking for something new and different.
