Reports suggest that Android 14 may introduce SMS satellite capabilities for Pixel and Galaxy smartphones

The iPhone 14 series introduces a groundbreaking feature called Emergency SOS via Satellite. This incredible technology allows users to connect to an orbiting satellite and report emergency situations, even in areas with no cellular signal. The Apple replay center receives these reports and promptly alerts emergency services to provide the necessary help. Huawei has also incorporated satellite support into their flagship devices, such as the Mate 50, Mate 50 Pro, and P60 series. These Huawei models enable users to send short texts via satellite when they find themselves in areas without cellular coverage.

Back in February, Dr. TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile eXperience unit, revealed that the Galaxy S23 line didn’t include satellite connectivity. However, he mentioned that Samsung would actively consider adopting this feature for future releases like the upcoming Galaxy S24 line, as long as the timing, infrastructure, and technology were suitable.

According to a tweet from the #TeamPixel Twitter account, Android 14 will offer native SMS via satellite capability on compatible devices. Although #TeamPixel is an independent Pixel fan club and not officially affiliated with Google, it’s highly likely that Google will equip the upcoming Pixel 8 series with the necessary hardware to support this feature. The tweet suggests that both Pixel and Galaxy phones will be among the first Android devices to offer satellite-supported SMS.

As we anticipate the launch of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in October, we can expect detailed information about how this feature will function on supported Pixel models. Additionally, the stable version of Android 14 is set to be released in just a few weeks, so there’s a possibility that satellite connectivity will be mentioned during that time.

Apple’s satellite connectivity feature has already demonstrated its life-saving potential, with instances of successful rescues in Alaska and British Columbia. Enabling access to emergency assistance in areas with no cellular service can make a significant difference in life-or-death situations. By extending this capability to Android phones, countless lives can be saved.

Since the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro should be unveiled this coming October, we are probably less than three months away from hearing all about how this feature will work on supported Pixel models. On the other hand, the final and stable version of Android 14 is just two to three weeks away from being released and it is possible that some word about satellite connectivity is mentioned at that time.

Apple’s satellite connectivity feature has already done its job with a man rescued after getting stranded in Alaska. In another incident, two women were rescued after getting stranded in British Columbia. It does appear that having the ability to access emergency help in areas without cellular service can be a huge life-saving feature that in many situations can be the difference between life and death; having this feature available on Android phones will also save many lives.
