It has been officially announced that David Corenswet will play Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming film. With his striking resemblance to Henry Cavill, Corenswet seems like the perfect fit for the role of Clark Kent. However, he may not have the same level of fame and recognition as other superhero actors. Nonetheless, industry insider Jeff Sneider believes that pairing Corenswet with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane will have a similar impact to the pairing of Amy Adams with Henry Cavill in the previous Superman films.
“Sources have expressed concerns about whether Corenswet has what it takes to carry an entire cinematic universe. However, similar concerns were raised about Henry Cavill, and he proved everyone wrong. Brosnahan, who has won an Emmy for her role in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’, will undoubtedly push Corenswet to excel.”
In the past, playing iconic superheroes like Superman, Batman, or the Joker would guarantee an actor’s status as a movie star. However, with frequent franchise remakes, this is no longer the case. Yet, casting lesser-known actors like Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, or Tom Holland has often resulted in great success, with these actors becoming inseparable from their characters.
Only time will tell if Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman will have a similar effect. James Gunn, the director of the film, seems confident in DC’s decision. The film, titled “Superman: Legacy,” is set to release on July 11, 2025.
