Relieved Pixel Watch Users Discover Missing Vital Feature On Launch

The best smartwatches from popular brands like Apple, Samsung, Fitbit, and Garmin are now equipped with blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) measurement capabilities. Interestingly, the Google Pixel Watch was launched with the feature disabled, but it appears that this is changing. According to posts on Reddit, the SpO2 tracking function has been enabled on some Pixel Watch units, allowing for more accurate measurement of oxygen levels in the blood.

Previously, the Pixel Watch only allowed for the measurement of estimated oxygen variation (EOV), an indirect estimation of the changes in blood oxygen levels. The Heart Metrics dashboard even indicated that the SpO2 feature was not available, adding to the frustration of some users. However, Reddit users have reported seeing a new “Oxygen saturation” card in their Fitbit Today app, displaying the percentage for the “Last sleep session” and explaining what the score means.

Blood oxygen saturation levels are crucial for proper body function and efficiency, with normal levels considered to be above 92%. This measurement is more reliable than EOV and is calculated by shining light onto the skin. While hospitals use a special pulse oximeter device to measure blood oxygen levels, smartwatches can now provide this function too.

It’s important to note that despite the advancement in technology, smartwatches are not a substitute for medical diagnosis. They should only be used for general well-being and fitness tracking. Nonetheless, the addition of SpO2 tracking to the Google Pixel Watch is a welcome development for users concerned about their respiratory health and sleep quality.
