Release of Bad Bunny-Led Spider-Man Movie Stripped from Schedule

Sony has removed El Muerto from its release calendar, causing it to lose its place as the first Latino-led Marvel film. The film, starring rapper Bad Bunny in the titular role, was supposed to be released on January 12, 2024, but it has been taken off alongside a couple of others.

Known in the comics as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez, El Muerto is an antihero with origins in the Spider-Man universe. His powers come from a special luchador mask, passed down through generations, which grants him superhuman abilities. Juan Carlos, a Mexican wrestler, becomes the target of the villain El Dorado, who challenges him for the mask. Juan Carlos’ father sacrifices his life to save his son, and Juan spends the next ten years preparing to face his family’s nemesis. When the project was announced at Sony’s Cinema Con in 2022, Bad Bunny expressed his excitement about bringing El Muerto to life.

This development is part of Sony’s trend of creating a separate universe from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing on Spider-Man. This trend started with the release of Venom in 2018, followed by its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021, and the recent release of Morbius. Sony’s Spider-Man universe is expanding with films like Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, coming on October 6, and Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson, scheduled for February 16, 2024.

More Release Dates Moved Around

Sony has also announced new release dates for other films. Dumb Money has been moved from October 20 to September 22, and LaKeith Stanfield will star in the biblical epic The Book of Clarence, which took the slot previously occupied by El Muerto and will now be released on January 12. Dumb Money tells the story of everyday people who became wealthy by turning GameStop into a successful company, while The Book of Clarence follows the journey of Clarence, who attempts to capitalize on the Messiah’s rise to fame for personal gain.

The cast of The Book of Clarence includes Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, Teyana Taylor, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, and Marianne Jean Baptiste.
