The Alien franchise has had a few quiet and uneasy years, following the disappointing critical and commercial performance of Alien: Covenant and Disney’s acquisition of Fox. But fans can now look forward to a return to the beloved sci-fi horror series with Fede Álvarez’s upcoming Alien film, which is scheduled for release on August 16, 2024.
Although the movie doesn’t yet have an official title, it was discovered in a recent production listing as Alien: Romulus, which may be a working title. While details about the plot are scarce, a synopsis provided by 20th Century Studios reveals that “In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” The film’s impressive cast includes Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.
Regrettably, Sigourney Weaver will not be reprising her iconic role as Ripley in the latest installment. Weaver has recently confirmed that her time in space is over, declaring, “that ship has sailed. I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. I put in my time in space!”
The upcoming Alien film marks the first entry in the franchise after a series of disappointing prequels from director Ridley Scott. Alien: Covenant and its predecessor Prometheus were criticized for stripping the titular alien of its mystery and burdening it with an unnecessary origin story. However, fans can rest assured that Álvarez’s vision will return to the series’ horror roots, with the director behind titles like Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe.
In addition to the upcoming movie, an Alien TV series is also in the works and will be led by showrunner Noah Hawley and star actress Sydney Chandler. While there is no release date yet for the series, fans can look forward to experiencing the terror of the Xenomorph on both the big and small screens in the near future.
