Redmi Go Review: Best Low-Budget Smartphone

Xiaomi has been known to deliver smartphones with great specifications under a great budget. And continuing to its tradition, Xiaomi has launched its cheapest smartphone till date in India called Redmi Go. This is Xiaomi’s most affordable smartphone priced just at Rs 4,499 having a good set of specifications at this price range. This is the company’s first smartphone to run on the Android Go OS. Today, we will review it to find out, Is it really a worth buy? Let’s find out!

Design and Display

Redmi Go has got a simple design with curved edges like most of the smartphones at this range. However, Xiaomi hasn’t compromised with the build quality of this phone and gave it a metallic clean finish at the back. Like most its phone, Xiaomi has packed Redmi Go with tough quality chassis that wouldn’t bend easily. Redmi Go is quite slim also having just 8.35mm thickness. As of now, Redmi Go comes in two color options – Black and Blue.

Furthermore, on the right side of the panel, there sit the power and volume buttons while at the left side you get dual slots – one for a single SIM card and other is for the second SIM card and a microSD card. This means you can easily run dual sim cards and a microSD card simultaneously. Coming at the top of the panel, you’ll get a secondary microphone and a 3.5mm headphone jack, while at the bottom, there placed a speaker grill, primary microphone, and Micro-USB port for charging.

Now coming to the front body, Redmi Go sports a 5-inch HD (720 x 1280 pixels) display with 16:9 aspect ratio. It has thick bezels at both ends of the display which is quite familiar in phones at this price range. At the top of the display, there sits a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with an earpiece, while at the bottom, you will get function buttons – back, home and recent apps.

Specifications and Software

At this price range, you can’t expect more from a phone, even though Xiaomi has shipped this phone with its best possible technology. The Redmi Go is powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC which is coupled with Adreno 308 GPU. Also, it comes with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of inbuilt storage which can be further expanded up to 256GB via a MicroSD card. All these specifications are available at a price tag of Rs 4,499.

However, if we go in the flashback, Redmi 5A which was launched back in 2017 features the same processor and GPU and was coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage at the same price of Rs 4,499. And now in 2019, Xiaomi has shipped Redmi Go at the same price for the 1GB/8GB variant is quite disappointing as we have a better option from the same company at the same price.

Apart from this, Redmi Go comes with quite good connectivity options as it includes  Dual-4G LTE support, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, Micro-USB port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It also has a couple of sensors onboard including a Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, and Ambient light sensor. Unfortunately, you’ll not get an Infrared sensor in this phone.

At the software end, Redmi Go is the first phone by Xiaomi to run on Android Go OS. It runs on the Android 8 Oreo (Go Edition) with a couple of pre-installed light-apps including Facebook Lite, YouTube Go and few more lightweight apps for smoother functioning. Overall, the Redmi Go feature good sets of specifications and software.

Performance, Camera, and Battery Life

As we mentioned above, Redmi Go runs on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC which is coupled with Adreno 308 GPU to deliver good performance. It easily handles a couple of multi-tasking without any sign of lag. In addition to multi-tasking, Redmi Go delivered good gaming performance also.

Of course, you can’t play some high-end games like PUBG and Asphalt 9 on 1GB of RAM. However, we had tried some other heavy games on this phone like Asphalt 8 and Arena of Valour on Redmi Go. Surprisingly, Redmi Go easily handles Asphalt 8 at medium graphics with a very minor frame drops. Even it delivered quite good performance in high graphics but after some time we finally made to drop to the medium setting. Overall, it delivered good performance at this price range.

In the camera department, Redmi Go features an 8-megapixel rear camera with f/1.2 micron pixels and an f/2.0 aperture. While at the front, it comes with a 5-megapixel selfie shooter with f/1.2 micron pixels and an f/2.2 aperture. In terms of camera quality, we will call it an average camera. It captures good shots with quite good details and depth. However, it wasn’t good as that of cameras we found in flagship phones, but at this price, it’s a good one. It comes with several inbuilt filters and frames just like other Redmi phones.

Furthermore, Redmi Go is fuelled by 3,000mAh battery which is capable enough to run this phone through the day. The company claims that it will give a standby time up to 10 days which is quite good at this price segment. However, it lasted for around 13 hours on continuous usage which includes few hours of Gaming, social media for about an hour, some online videos streaming and YouTube and about an hour of music playback which looks fairly good. Meanwhile, it comes with a normal 5W charger for charging.

Verdict

As per our review, Redmi Go is a good smartphone at this price segment. However, it’s a bit costly than the company’s own Redmi 5A which comes with comparatively good specifications at the same price. Even though, if you are concise on budget and looking for a good performer, you can go with this. However, we recommend you to add some more bucks in your budget and go with some good specification smartphone.
