Reddit’s largest community is proposing that users transition to Discord

The Reddit community r/malefashionadvice, which boasts over 5 million subscribers, is now urging its users to gather on Discord and Substack as part of the ongoing Reddit protest. When attempting to access r/malefashionadvice, visitors are redirected to the community’s Discord and Substack pages. The Discord platform enables community members to chat and share about fashion-related topics, while the Substack hosts a plethora of helpful guides. According to one of the moderators, the sentiment regarding the move to Discord has been overwhelmingly positive, with many users claiming it provides a superior experience. The Substack, on the other hand, is not intended to be a subscription-based platform but rather a place to house the subreddit’s guides in a neatly formatted manner.

However, both Discord and Substack have a significantly smaller user base compared to r/malefashionadvice, with the Discord having just over 2,000 users and the Substack having close to 560 subscribers. This discrepancy in user numbers can be attributed to the recent controversies surrounding Reddit, particularly the new API pricing that caused some third-party apps to shut down. During the peak of the protest in June, over 8,000 communities went private, but many have since reopened after being threatened with removal by Reddit.

Despite the community still being private, Reddit expressed its dissatisfaction and informed the moderators that they would be replaced if they didn’t reopen r/malefashionadvice. In response, the moderators stated that they have been actively moderating the community behind the scenes and that it has only been closed for 13 days. However, regardless of the admin’s message, the moderation team plans to continue until they are inevitably removed. They believe that even if new mods are installed and the community is reopened, a large portion of the regular users may not return due to the persistent issues with bots and bad actors infiltrating the subreddit on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, other communities are also participating in the protest in various ways. For instance, r/AccidentalRenaissance, a subreddit focused on finding images that resemble Renaissance paintings, has gone private after the resignation of its moderators and is leading users to join alternative Reddit communities such as Kbin and Lemmy. Another community, r/PICS, which only allows posts about comedian John Oliver, is requesting Oliver to join the moderation team. Over 2,000 subreddits are still in darkness as part of the ongoing protest.
