Redditors cleverly trick AI content farm into publishing a fabricated ‘World of Warcraft’ feature

There is a lot of excitement among Redditors about a new feature called Glorbo. Some even believe it will have a significant impact on the game. This enthusiasm caught the attention of a blog called “The Portal,” which is powered by Z League, an app that aims to unite gamers.

Unfortunately, there’s a catch: Glorbo doesn’t actually exist. It seems that “The Portal” is using AI to scrape posts and turn them into content.

One Redditor, u/kaefer_kriegerin, discovered that “The Portal” was turning gaming discussions from Reddit into blog posts. They decided to play a trick on the content farm by inventing a fake WoW feature called Glorbo. Surprisingly, their plan worked. Other Redditors and even some Blizzard developers joined in the charade, as confirmed by The Portal.

“The Portal” even quoted u/kaefer_kriegerin in their now-deleted blog post, where they expressed their happiness about the fake Glorbo feature. The entire situation is quite unbelievable. An archived version of the post can still be found.

It seems that “The Portal” does involve some human input. They added “(Satire)” to the headline of the post before deleting it. They also published an article about WoW taking away players’ keys, which is not true. However, that post has also been removed.

Engadget has reached out to Blizzard to inquire about the Glorbo hype and whether it will be introduced to WoW. Interestingly, Blizzard is reportedly using AI to assist with character outfits and concept art. We have also contacted Z League for comment and will update if we receive a statement.

With the increasing use of generative AI, we can expect to see a flood of AI-generated content on websites, including mainstream publications. This year, “CNET” had to retract a series of AI-generated finance posts due to errors. The site’s staff has expressed concerns about the use of AI in their work. Similarly, “Gizmodo” publisher G/O Media continues to forge ahead with AI-generated blog posts, despite some embarrassing mistakes. The human writers and editors at the company were understandably frustrated.

Of course, mistakes happen, and human writers aren’t perfect. However, true journalists always strive for accuracy and fairness. Generative AI still has a long way to go in that regard. While AI chatbots have made many errors, some believe AI can assist newsrooms with fact-checking and other tasks.

Meanwhile, Google has developed a tool that can generate news articles and automate certain tasks to aid journalists. However, critics argue that it may undervalue the effort required to produce reliable and readable news stories.
