Reddit appears to have overcome significant issues that occurred for approximately one hour. During the outages, I experienced difficulties loading Reddit pages on my logged-in browsers, encountering error messages and blank white screens. However, when I attempted to access the site while logged out, the pages loaded without any problems. At present, I am able to browse Reddit without any issues.
The difficulties were not limited to just me. Some of my colleagues at The Verge also experienced issues loading Reddit pages, and according to Downdetector reports, there were approximately 30,000 user reports regarding the problem.
Reddit has acknowledged the issue and is currently implementing a solution, as mentioned in a message posted on the company’s status site at 5:34PM ET. The status site also indicates that there is a “major outage” affecting desktop web, mobile web, and the company’s native mobile apps. In an email sent at 5:53PM ET, Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt stated that the problem should be resolved “in the next few minutes.”
These outages on Wednesday follow previous issues that emerged in recent weeks. In June, the platform experienced crashes due to numerous subreddits going dark in protest against the company’s API pricing. In July, Reddit’s search functionality was disrupted for several hours.
Update August 2nd, 5:56PM ET: Additional information provided by a Reddit spokesperson.
